Jeep Chief Reveals New Electric Wrangler is in the Works for 2020

As more and more automakers introduce electric vehicles into their lineups, Jeep fans have continued to wonder whether or not we’ll ever see an electric Jeep Wrangler arrive on Jeep dealership lots. At the LA Auto Show press conference this year, Jeep CEO made EV fans very happy with a simple announcement: Yes, we will see an electric Wrangler and it’s going to arrive sooner than you might think.

“A full plug-in electric Jeep Wrangler will be available in 2020,” Jeep CEO Mike Manley told reporters. “[The new Wrangler] will further our commitment to all those who value the responsible, sustainable enjoyment of the great outdoors, and very importantly future-proof this Wrangler for generations to come.”

Although Manley revealed that the new Jeep will actually be a plug-in hybrid rather than a fully electric vehicle, we’re still excited. We’re confident that the automaker is slowly working its way toward an all-electric model. Jeep’s sister companies have achieved major success thanks to electric vehicles (specifically the Fiat 500e and Chrysler’s award-winning Pacifica Hybrid minivan) so it’s only a matter of time before Jeep jumps on the bandwagon as well.

In fact, the automaker recently debuted an all-electric concept vehicle at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show. The Jeep Yuntu Concept (a full-size, three-row, six seat SUV) appeared at the show to surprised crowds.

“The Jeep Yuntu Concept is a vehicle created for the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show to target the tastes of Chinese customers,” Jeep said in a statement. “This new concept includes futuristic exterior design, [a] flexible interior and a plug-in hybrid powertrain.”

Although the Yuntu was just a concept and is unlikely to ever make its way onto the production line, the vehicle gave Jeep fans a glimpse at how an electric Wrangler might function and what it might feel like–at least in terms of technology. The Yuntu, with all of its uber-futuristic detailing and far-out Star Trek-esque design components, completely lacks the Wrangler’s classic, down-to-earth relatability.

But if what Jeep fans want is something fresh and new, they won’t have long to wait. FCA unveiled the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Sahara and the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon at the LA Auto Show in November 2017. Both vehicles are truly remarkable.

Best of all: the new 2018 Wrangler will come available in both a hybrid and four-cylinder engine option. We still have a while to wait before a fully electric version arrives, but the 2018 Wrangler is more than just a nice consolation prize.
